In Acts 16:16-24, we encounter a fascinating yet sobering story about a slave girl with a spirit of divination (Greek: python, meaning serpent or dragon). Her ability to foretell the future brought great profit to her masters, who exploited her gift for their own financial gain. Although her words about Paul and his companions were accurate, Paul discerned that her words were not inspired by the Holy Spirit. This moment of spiritual insight led to her deliverance—but it also triggered persecution.
This passage teaches us an important lesson: not every accurate word of knowledge or spiritual demonstration comes from God. The spirit of divination is subtle, often mimicking the voice of the Holy Spirit to deceive even the very elect if possible (Matthew 24:24). As believers, we must cultivate discernment to distinguish between what is of God and what merely appears to be.
The Spirit of Python and Its Deception
The Greek word for divination, python, with draws a vivid image of a serpent—a creature known for its cunning nature. Many gifted believers encounter this spirit, are attacked by it, or, tragically, are deceived by it. The spirit of divination preys on pride, unchecked ambition, and the love of money, all of which can pervert a God-given gift if it is not stewarded with humility and submission to God.
The slave girl in Acts 16 is a striking example. Her masters prostituted her gift, using it to gain wealth while she remained in spiritual and physical bondage. The love of money drove their actions, and the girl's abilities, though real, were under the influence of a demonic spirit. This story warns us that gifting alone is not evidence of godliness. Accurate prophecies or words of knowledge may come from an unholy source, and without discernment, we can mistake them for divine revelation.
The Craving for Gifts Without Discernment
One of the greatest pitfalls in the Body of Christ today is an unbalanced craving for prophecy and other spiritual gifts without discerning the heart of the person carrying them. Believers are often mesmerized by prophetic words, heaping praise on the vessel while overlooking their character or relationship with God. This misplaced focus leads to idolatry of man and blinds the Church to the true source of some spiritual activities.
Discernment allows us to see beyond the surface. It enables us to recognize whether a gift is submitted to God or being manipulated for personal gain. Without this spiritual insight, we risk being led astray by individuals operating under the influence of spirits like divination.
My Testimony: The Foundation of Prayer and Identity
I thank God for leading me to be apart of a group where an Apostle is teaching the gifted people the importance of prayer and not on how to prophecy. His focus is not on the ability to be accurate when we prophecy but on cultivating a deep, intimate relationship with God through prayer. He emphasized the language we use in prayer, encouraging us to ask God for the right words when we feel inadequate.
Equally important is the posture we take when approaching God. As sons and daughters, we must come boldly before His throne, not as beggars but with confidence in our identity and His willingness to hear us (Hebrews 4:16). This foundation of prayer and identity safeguards us from the spirit of divination. It aligns our hearts with God’s will and keeps our gifts rooted in His purpose.
A Call to Self-Examination
Paul’s confrontation with the spirit of divination in Acts 16 challenges us to ask hard questions:
Are we discerning the source of the spiritual activities we witness?
Is our focus on the gift or the Giver?
Are we submitting our own gifts back to God, or are we allowing pride or ambition to corrupt them?
Discernment begins with relationship—an intimate walk with the Lord that enables us to recognize His voice and reject counterfeits. This requires prayer, humility, and a heart wholly surrendered to God.
The Danger of the Love of Money
The love of money is a recurring theme in this story and a root cause of much spiritual corruption. Just as the slave girl’s masters exploited her gift for profit, the modern Church must guard against using spiritual gifts as commodities. When money becomes the driving force, the spirit of divination finds a foothold, twisting and manipulating what God intended for His glory.
Encouragement for Believers
Believers, the call to discernment is not optional—it is essential. We are living in times when the spirit of divination and other deceptive influences are rampant. To stand firm, we must:
Cultivate Discernment: Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in testing every spirit (1 John 4:1).
Guard Our Hearts: Submit our gifts and motives to God regularly.
Stay Rooted in Prayer: Build a foundation of communication with God that keeps us aligned with His will.
Reject the Love of Money: Trust God to supply our needs and avoid compromising for material gain.
Let this be a call for introspection and action. Let us examine the condition of our hearts, the stewardship of our gifts, and our focus on God. Discernment is not just a spiritual skill—it is a lifeline in a world filled with counterfeits.
